The First Nine Years

Lis Johnston was an esteemed singer for many years in the Melbourne and National folk scene. She passed away in 1990 and a perpetual award was instigated by her husband Jamie to celebrate her life.

The award recognises an emerging singer and is presented each year at the National Folk Festival in Canberra.

The CD presents music from both Lis herself and the first nine recipients of the award.

This CD is a compilation of 17 tracks showcasing the brilliant musicianship of the late Louis McManus

The compilation was the result of the efforts of Peter Howell, Max McManus, Hugh McDonald, Louis himself before his death and many others.

Folk Victoria purchased a stock of CDs to assist Louis in his time of illness.

Folk Victoria assisted in the financing of this superb CD of whistle music from Northumbria, played by Bob Ballantine and many friends.

Much of the music stems from the playing of his dad, Billy Ballantine.
